Joan Tower

Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 5

This animation was created at Joan Tower's request for the premiere of the clarinet quartet arrangement of Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 5 at the Yale School of Music on December 4th, 2022. This is not the premiere performance, where the projected animation followed and synchronized with the live performance in realtime, but an isolated look at the animation itself, set to a layered recording created by Nikki Pet (clarinetist and animator), which features impressions of notable women in classical music. Many of the women featured are dedicatees of works in Tower's Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman series. The synchronization between the animation and music in this video (and in the live performance) was created using A.I.-based technology created by Kaitlin Pet, PhD student in music informatics at Indiana University.
